‘We Need To Modernize Our Markets’ – Prof. Osafo On Adum Market Fire Outbreak
Professor Joseph Osafo, Director for Center for Aging Studies at the University of Ghana, has asked State authorities to begin to restructure the markets in Ghana.
Commenting on the fire outbreak at Adum on Friday, March 21 on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, the Professor opined that it is about time the authorities rebuilt the marketplaces by installing safety measures to safeguard the traders and prevent fires.
Dozens of traders at Adum lost their properties to the fire outbreak.
The fire, which broke out Friday night, posed significant challenges due to water supply issues and limited access routes as firefighters found difficulties bringing the situation under control while battling the flames for hours.
The firefighters successfully extinguished the massive fire but it had already ravaged many structures.
To prevent recurrence of the incident, Prof. Osafo stressed; “We have to modernize our markets.”
He also commiserated with the traders, hoping for them to better recover.
