What Next If Ghana Freedom Party Fails To Elect A New Flagbearer? – Dr. Otchere-Ankrah Queries EC

Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has queried the Electoral Commission on their way forward regarding the Ghana Freedom Party’s flagbearer, Akua Donkor’s demise.

Akua Donkor passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024 at the Ridge Hospital after succumbing to an illness.

Before her demise, she was aspiring to become Ghana’s President in 2025 and was number 3 on the ballot paper.

Madam Akua Donkor died at age 72.

Following her death, the Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended printing of the ballot papers and issued a 10-day ultimatum to the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) to elect a new presidential candidate.

The EC quoted Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution to support the decision of giving GFP 10 days.

Article 50(4) states that “where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of the ten days shall be allowed for nominations.”

“In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers which was near completion”, a statement by the EC read.

Contributing to Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah extended his condolences to the bereaved family and the party.

However, he sought to find out from the Electoral Commission what their preparations are should the GFP decide to exit the contest.

“If they say they can’t find any person, so they won’t contest again, what will happen?”, he sought for answers.

Dr. Otchere-Ankrah also admonished the political actors to ensure peace and stability before, during and after the December 7 election.

He advised the youth not to fall for the enticements of the politicians and urged them to abstain from violence.
