‘Where Is Justice In Obuasi?’ – Pratt On AngloGold Ashanti Shooting incident

“Mining has become a major problem for this country”, seasoned journalist Kwesi Pratt says as he comments on the deaths of eight persons at Obuasi, Ashanti Region.
The eight persons lost their lives when they together with other illegal miners attempted to allegedly loot gold from AngloGold Ashanti over the weekend.
The miners were said to have cut into the mine shaft of the company but were confronted by military personnel protecting it.
The confrontation led to shooting resulting in deaths and injuries of the invaders.
Addressing the incident during “Kokrokoo” panel discussion programme on Peace FM, Kwesi Pratt expressed worry over the mining situation in Ghana.
He said; “Mining has become a major problem for this country. It is not only galamsey though galamsey is a part of it but there are many things in mining that are very disturbing.”
He was also displeased with the level of development and the unkind situation at Obuasi where AngloGold operates.
“Where is justice in Obuasi?”, he questioned stressing mining communities must immensely benefit in terms of development.
“The numerous countries where gold and oil mining goes on must also benefit from it. If the country doesn’t benefit from such activities, it breeds agitations”, Mr. Pratt said.
He appealed to President John Mahama to focus on the mining sector and urged him to ensure ending galamsey is his top priority.
Mr. Pratt cautioned that as the previous government was voted out for failing to curb this menace, the Mahama administration will equally suffer such fate should the President also fail.
