You Will Be Sacked If You Fail To Declare Your Assets By End Of March 2025! – Prez Mahama Warns Appointees
President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to all government appointees to declare their assets under Article 286 of the 1992 constitution and the Public Office Holders Declaration of Assets and Disqualification Act, 1998 (Act 550) before the end of 31st March 2025 or face severe punishments not excluding the removal from office.
The President made this call during a short ceremony at the Flagstaff House in Accra on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, with the Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu.
During the meeting, President Mahama announced that he had declared all his assets and had handed over the documents to that effect to the Auditor-General.
Following his submission, he delivered a brief but firm speech, urging his appointees to comply with the constitutional requirement of asset declaration.
Addressing the media and attendees to the short ceremony, Mr. Mahama said; “There are many people in public office who do not know that they are covered under this assets declaration regime, and so Auditor-General there must be a reminder to all these people that they are covered under this assets declaration regime.”
President Mahama observed that Ghana’s Assets declaration regime and its related activities have more often than not, been shrouded in secrecy, and its level of compliance is very difficult to measure.
President Mahama noted that declaring one’s assets forms part of the steps to curtail the increasing corruption and corruption-related activities amongst public office holders, adding that it is for this reason he has openly declared his assets; an exercise he had engaged in privacy in times past.
Issuing a stern warning to his appointees, the President said; “I have also taken this step to send an unmistakable signal to all public office holders, especially those that I have appointed that I take the declaration of assets very seriously and expect full compliance from them. I have asked the Chief of Staff to send word to all appointees to ensure that they declare their assets by the end of the first quarter of this year, that is by 31st March 2025. I wish to stress that any appointee failing to meet the deadline will face severe sanctions, not excluding removal from office.”
This is to reinforce his commitment to accountability and good governance, ensuring that public officials uphold integrity in the discharge of their duties.
“I have always maintained that while it is all well and good to punish corruption, a more effective way of addressing the canker is preventing it from occurring in the first place”, President Mahama said.
