You’ll Go Down As An ‘Autocrat’ And The ‘Most Incompetent’ Speaker In Ghana – Bagbin Told

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament

The Head of Research at policy think tank, Danquah Institute, Dr. Frank Bannor has blasted the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for seemingly refusing to restore calm in the Legislative House.

The Speaker being the head of the House is said to be the final arbiter in the deadlock in Parliament but the former has served notice that he is not in charge of the sitting arrangement of the members which is causing a major problem, hence if the Majority wants to reclaim their chamber which has been taken over by the Minority, they should consult with the Clerk.

Nonetheless, according to the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin in an interview on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show last week, the Clerk also communicates a different information to them saying they have no unfettered power to do what the Speaker is saying.

Parliament is currently on indefinite suspension after the House reconvened on Thursday, November 7.

Addressing the issue during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Dr. Frank Bannor described the Speaker as an “autocrat”, stressing “Speaker Bagbin will go into the archives of Ghana’s political history as one or if not, the most incompetent, ineffective Speaker under the 4th Republic”.

“For the first time, we have a Speaker who thinks everything should be about him and not the State”, he added.

Dr. Bannor wondered “what would happen to the country of Ghana” if Bagbin had been elected President of Ghana.

He advised Ghanaians not to repeat the “skirt and blouse” voting, stating “if we get any parliamentary system closer to what we are seeing today, the worst is yet to come”.
