You’re Losing Your Goodwill – Bagbin Fired!
Former PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed has castigated the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin over his adamant posture in the Legislative House and his disregard for the Supreme Court.
The court had ruled to stay the Speaker’s decision to vacate some seats in the House but he refused to oblige by the verdict and in reply, filed an application to suspend it.
However, the court declared the application “invalid” and ruled against the Speaker.
This notwithstanding, Parliament has twice been suspended indefinitely by the Speaker because the Majority and Minority Caucuses cannot find an amicable solution to their impasse.
The Speaker being the leader of Parliament, to some people, is to show leadership quality by intervening in the situation and restoring calm by mainly ordering the Minority who always occupy the majority chamber to return to their respective position and also obeying the court ruling.
Former President J.A Kufour, speaking about the parliamentary standoff in an interview, charged the Speaker to take up the gauntlet to bring peace and order in the House.
He described the situation in Parliament as “embarrassing”.
“I will plead with the Speaker of Parliament to step up and show leadership. What’s happening in parliament is embarrassing. It can destroy his illustrious record”, former President Kufour commented.
Atik, who had previously been an ardent supporter of the Speaker for asserting the authority of Parliament, says he (Bagbin) is now taking things overboard.
“You are losing the goodwill”, he told Bagbin in his submissions on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show.
He asked the Speaker to heed the advice of the venerable Statesman, J.A Kufour.
“If the former President is saying it is becoming embarrassing now, it tells you that the buck stops with you (Bagbin)”, Atik said, adding “he should think beyond some of the petty considerations that inspired his decision and look at the bigger picture which the national interest”.
Atik further admonished Speaker Bagbin to respect the Supreme Court ruling on the matter stressing “when the Supreme Court speaks, they have spoken and what they say is final. You may disagree and there are channels to seek redress but once they have spoken, in the interim, try to work with what they have said”.
