You’re Not More Ghanaian Than Us – Prof. Smart Sarpong Scolds Bagbin
Prof. Smart Sarpong has expressed disappointment in the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, over the latter’s adamant posture towards the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has dismissed an application by the Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin seeking to overturn the court’s ruling that suspended his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
This follows an initial suit filed by Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, challenging the Speaker’s declaration.
The Speaker’s legal team argued that the Supreme Court lacked jurisdiction in this case among other grounds, hence refusing to heed the court’s verdict.
He communicated his dissent through an official letter addressed to the Supreme Court stating “the attached processes which were left at the Legal Services Office of the Parliamentary Service by three bailiffs of the Court on Wednesday, 16th October 2024, are hereby returned”.
Quoting he has constitutional immunity under Article 117 of the 1992 Constitution, the Speaker “directed the return of the attached processes for your necessary action”.
He however sought the same court to vacate their ruling but after hearing arguments from all parties including the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Supreme Court maintained that its earlier ruling was appropriate and quashed the Speaker’s application.
“We have considered the application, and we have come to the conclusion that the grounds supporting the application have no merit”, the Chief Justice stated.
Tackling the issue on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Senior Researcher, Prof. Smart Sarpong who was obviously not happy about the Speaker’s behavior asked him to reconsider his position on the matter.
“Which of the Members of Parliament including senior Bagbin is more Ghanaian than someone else. It is privilege that you have; only a few people can be Speakers until the world comes to an end. You are not a Ghanaian” than any person, he exclaimed.
He stressed the Speaker mustn’t see himself as super-human, stressing “God created us the same and we will die the same”.
